If you’re a Bundy rum drinker, the last few years have been pretty exciting. Bundaberg Rum have been bringing out lots of new products, and tackling new markets with their latest offerings. There’s some girly rums joining the Dark & Stormy range, and then there’s some products of refinement. Like this one. They belong to the Master Distiller’s Collection.

They all have a snazzy square bottle that looks top class with minimalist labelling and perfect for gifting. The prices are a bit more than you’d expect to pay for Bundy, but our opinion is they’re worth the price.

This offering is the cheapest of the collection at about $55.

They’re aged in cognac and brandy barrels, and as the name suggests there’s only a few made in a run.

Confusing Nose

Our wenches had a lot of trouble identifying the nose as there’s a very strong initial wash of acetone that assaults the smell. Once the nail polish remover had passed, it became much more pleasing and actually enjoyable.

Oaky barrel

Sweet molasses agave nectar

Liquorice

Banana

Fruity berries; mulberry pie & macerated strawberries

Tart, Tight Palate

We all agreed that this was the 1st Bundy rum we’d tried that we thought was a pleasant sippable rum, despite it having an initial bitterness. All others previous are reserved for cocktails and mixing only.

Green grapes

Gooseberries

Vinegared capers

Maple syrup

Rubber glove

Overall, we think this is worth a try and we’re willing to give the rest of the Master Distillers’ Rum Collection from Bundaberg Rum a go as well.

At Easter time, Rum Wenches supplement their rum consumption with a good swig of chocolate. This year, we’re celebrating Easter like a proper sailor toff and making executive rum balls aptly named Dark Mutiny Balls.

While any rum will do, we’ve used Bundaberg Rum’s spiced rum, Mutiny. Mainly because it’s not much good to drink by itself, and its spicy notes lend itself very well to the fruit-driven rum balls.

This rum ball recipe is quick, easy and will make you very popular with your friends.

Ingredients

400g Dark fruit cake, chopped

1 bottle Mutiny Spiced Rum

¼ cup dried cranberries, chopped

360g Dark chocolate, melted

½ cup Dessicated coconut

Method

Pour some rum into a glass and test for aroma, purity and flavour. Test again just to make sure. You never can be too careful.

Crumble all your fruit cake into a bowl.

Measure out ¼ cup of rum. Add to bowl and mix well.

Ask the fruit cake if it would like some rum. If it says yes, you’ve done too much testing in step 1. But add another glug of rum for good measure. You don’t want a bloody mutiny among your friends!

Add cranberries and coconut. Mix mix mix.

Add melted chocolate. Mix with your hands to be like a wench, or with a wooden spoon to be like a lady.

Finish the rum in your glass.

Roll into balls, and if you want roll in coconut, cocoa powder or icing sugar.

Invite over some friends, finish your bottle of rum.

Make Mutiny Balls even more Awesome

If you want to really impress people, toast your coconut in a fry pan before adding to the mix.

And Wenches, we know that the way to a pirate’s heart is through his stomach, so use Belgian couverture chocolate if you want him to always sail on your ship.
